Supplements

Plants are the basis for many supplements, because plants and their seeds produce abundant levels of good-for-you natural compounds.  Dr. Stuart has 20+ years dealing with the measurement, the extraction and biological testing of polyphenols. Significant opportunities exist to formulate specific polyphenols into supplements for the purpose of health-specific outcomes.

 Improved Heart Health

The polyphenols found in apples, grapes, tea, berries and cacao have been shown, either as whole food, as powders or as extracts to promote cardiovascular health. These benefits are manifested in better vascular reactivity (vasodilation) and lower blood pressure.  Studies done over several decades indicate that people who consume higher amounts of these foods have significantly lower risk of heart attack or stroke. Clearly, there are opportunities to use these natural products to improve the health of the general population as we age.

Memory Enhancement

Studies show that recall and reaction time are improved in children and in older adults after consuming portions berries or cacao. These results are significant because the response is both short-term and longer-term for both populations. Application of these foods, powders or extracts has significant potential for products that improve brain health.

Increased Strength

Loss of muscle mass and muscle strength is due to inactivity and normal aging. Evidence is two-fold for the effect polyphenols can have on muscles. First, recovery from strenuous exercise has been shown to hasten muscle recovery. Second, in the absence of exercise, muscles in both rodents and humans can increase in strength.
